Tools and Hardware Reviews of Delta 980T-SSSD-DST Pilar Single Handle Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet with Touch2O Technology and Soap Dispenser, StainlessCustomer Review: It's Very Cool Summary: 4 Stars
We splurged and purchased the Delta Touch2O faucet. It is a very expensive item for us and almost double what you would have to pay for a lesser pull down, single handle faucet. But we like gadgets and convenience and this faucet is definitely convenient. It is so easy to turn on and off - this saves time and effort, keeps the faucet and surrounding area cleaner, and can help protect your family from cross contamination when working with raw foods.
Now, you probably have figured out that you still have to use the handle to set the temperature and flow rate. So, this is only convenient when you need the same temp and flow rate on a repeated basis. That is certainly true when rinsing dishes or when you need to wash your hands many times. But keep in mind theoretically that if you needed to adjust the temperature or flow rate between each use the touch feature wouldn't gain you anything. We are in the process now of settling in on where to leave the handle on a general basis. Medium temp and medium flow rate would be the most logical - can't be too far off from what you need and works well for washing hands. But I wonder if this is going to be one of those things that a husband and wife don't agree on. I think we might have faucet battles as my wife likes to leave it in the warm and full rate position. This does give you a glimpse into a future where we will speak to our faucets to turn them on and we can tell them the temperature and flow.
As far as the installation, I did it myself and it took 1.5 hours. Congrats to those who did it in an hour. And the 1.5 hours was just for the installation. It took me 1.75 hours to remove the old faucet (actually that took a half hour) and clean the hard water deposits that had accumulated underneath the old faucet - it had the apron that covered the entire area around the three holes. The instructions were well written and it was pretty step by step.
My only complaints that resulted in 4 and not 5 stars are:
- it's expensive but it's the early adopter price I think - imagine you'll find this technology at lower price points in the future
- the hose is the flexible, mesh hosing like the flexible hosing used to connect your sink to the water supply. It's lightweight so gravity does nothing to help pull the hose back into the faucet - you kind of have to push/feed it back in. Our previous faucet was a Moen and the hose was clad in the flexible metal conduit which gave it some weight, as well as less friction, to go back into the faucet more easily. As I write this I wonder if I attached a weight to the house under the sink if it would go back in more easily. However, the hose is attached directly to the solenoid which is dangling in space and I would be hesitant to put any stress on the connection. I'll have to think about this and report back.
Customer Review: It Works & it's Big Summary: 4 Stars
Just had the faucet installed today (Sept 15) I connected the wires and batteries in five minutes. Turned it on and water came out. Touched the top of the faucet and the water flow stopped. Touched the faucet again and the water started flowing again. It's big, I mean very big. It's much bigger than I thought it would be. Man, this faucet is BIG. I like new toys, and this is a toy that I will play with all night. Other reviewer had problems, so I'll be watching closely.
So far so good, it even matches the granite counter top we got. (New kitchen)
Oh yah, shipping was next day as well, paid a little more but I got this sucker when I needed it.
Update: Two days later:
Water leak under the sink, coming from the solenoid. Not good, might be a bad solenoid or poor install. No touch 2 go feature, no water. Can't risk water damage to my new cabinets. I still like the faucet, plumber is coming back tomorrow. If he can't fix the leak, I'll buy another one and have another plumber install the solenoid, if I can't do it myself.
I will reserve final judgment for now. word of advice: Keep checking under the sink for leaks.
Update 2:
Traced the water leak to a pipe joint, The touch feature worked for another day then stopped completely. Sent an email to Delta and they will be sending out a replacement solenoid. And I don't have to send anything back to them.
Update: Sept 20th
It's broken. Touch 2 Go is gone. Now it's a matter of if Delta will replace it.
Update: Nov 21, 2009
After posting my first review someone had an issue with it being posted too early after installation and thought that the feature is not needed. I can report that the touch 2 go feature is still working. I think it's a great feature. Instant on and off, at full flow, I discovered that when I want '4 cups' of water in my coffee pot, the touch 2 go shuts offs the water flow at the right time with a simple tap.
It's the little things that makes life better.
Update: December 4th 2009
Still working, just like in the video. It may not be the norm, but what do I care? Tap on, tap off. Ha Ha, the little blue led still works too. (just a small joke)
Feb 1, 2010.
Still working, by working I mean, I can tap the faucet or tap and the water flow either stops or starts. Just like the video clip.
Customer Review: Nice Faucet! Summary: 4 Stars
I have to admit, I've been sort of enthralled with this product since the first time I saw it. We had a dinner party and one of our guests broke our old kitchen faucet - providing us with the excuse we needed to get this nifty thing.
We lucked out and found it on CLEARANCE at our local Lowes. $100 off retail and a slightly damaged box. Too good to pass up.
The OOBE is a little daunting. Lots of pieces, a decent sized instruction sheet (yes guys, you will need it) and wires. Oh the wires. A not so saavy do-it-yourselfer might feel a bit overwhelmed. Crack a beer, take a breath and make sure you don't have anything pressing for the next two hours.
If you stick to the instructions and have the proper tools on hand (philips screw driver, channel lock plyers) installation is a cinch.
There are a few 1 and 2 star reviews out there that attempt to give this product a bad rap. I experienced some of their problems too, but came up with minor tweaks:
"It makes a loud thunk when you tap it on and off." - Yes, if you have the faucet on full blast. Make sure your handle is set to about 40% with the temp 50/50 hot/cold. If you have cake batter, mud, muck, etc on your hands, you don't need much more than that.
"It took HOURS to feed the hose through the spigot." - You must've been doing something wrong during install. If you follow the instructions, use the guide cap and feed the hose evenly, it'll go right through. I tried to recreate the issue they had and pushed the hose through without the guide cap and it hung right away. Just follow the instructions...
"...some of the connections that hold the tubing together under the sink are cheap plastic connectors rather than screw together plumbing connections. They go together reasonably easily, they also come apart reasonably easily..." - Again, follow the instructions. Several steps during the instructions ask you to pull on the fittings to make sure they're attached securely. If you do it PROPERLY, there are no problems. I have about 80PSI going to the unit and there are no leaks whatsoever.
Bottom line, I recommend this product. I only gave it 4/5 stars due to the price. Yeah I got a killer deal, but 99% of you will have to shell out the full $300+ for it. I don't care who you are, that's quite a chunk of change.
Customer Review: Nice unit, and a fun gadget Summary: 4 Stars
We like our Delta faucet. The fit and finish is high quality, and the cool factor is off the charts.
We had a kitchen remodel going at the time, so we had the plumber install it (for $140!!!) but any handy person could put it in. I looked over the instructions (which are quite good, and available on-line @ Delta if you'd like to see ahead of time) and found it no more difficult than previous units I've installed.
The touch feature is cool and we use it every day without any problems. I like having the added security of knowing that when the faucet control valve is closed that the faucet will not turn on by touch. It means you have to plan ahead if you want to use the touch feature, but it's the only practical way to implement it. Set your temp and water level, and then just touch the handle or faucet anywhere to turn off and on. This feature is thoughtfully implemented.
The retractable sprayer is very nice, and we specifically bought this faucet for the magnetic coupling that holds it in place. If you've ever had one of these faucets with the sprayer built into the spout, you know they tend to "droop" over time. Not with the positive magnetic connection.
I have only one small issue in that the angle of the spray from the spout is not quite vertical. The stream coming from the faucet shoots near the front of our sink, instead of in the center. I know this will depend on where you install it, and what kind of sink you have. Something to consider if your sink is extra small front to back.
Bottom line, nice product that's a little pricey but a fun gadget.
Customer Review: LOVE THE NEW TECHNOLOGY, HIGH END FAUCET WORTH THE MONEY Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this faucet for a complete kitchen remodel. Was a little bit hesitant given some of the reviews, especially the ones stating the batteries have to be replaced often. Have been using mine since August, 2010, when it was installed by my plumber in our new kitchen. It is a big faucet, but it fits in beautifully with my kitchen style which is traditional. This size is great since I have a deep 10x20inch double large-small bowl sink. Have not replaced batteries yet. Faucet is sensitive in some areas; however, I usually tap underneath or on top of curve of the faucet with no problems. One thing I do not like with this faucet as compared to my last one is the temperature control does not give much of a range. I'm assuming this is the faucet design and not a error in set up by my plumber. I've just gotten used to the sensitivity of adjusting water temp.
All in all, I love the faucet and so far the technology works well. Now if I could only remember that not everybody has this faucet in their home. When I use the kitchen sink in other people's homes, I'm always tapping on their faucet to shut it off.
