Tools and Hardware Reviews of DELTA 78-851 Universal 27-Inch by 24-Inch by 2 1/2-Inch Table BoardCustomer Review: Absolute junk Summary: 1 Stars
I have a Delta saw with one of these table boards that's 7 or 8 years old. Unfortunately, due to a moisture issue and the resulting swelling of the board, I had to replace it. I bought this item as it is the same as the one I have that came with my Biesmeyer fence. My how things have changed in the last 7 or 8 years. The one I HAD was square and built soundly. This one is a complete waste of money and absolute junk. I would imagine most purchasers do not have the benefit of another one to compare with, but I will not use this piece of junk on my saw. Looks like I'll be making one (which is a pretty straight forward operation... guess this is what I get for trying to take the easy route). The old one had a thick, high quality plastic laminate. The new one is some cheap, thin melamine type of laminate. The old one was square and flush to the frame. The new one has a frame that isn't even square and the top is crooked on the frame. On one side, the top actually goes from overhanging the frame to being shy of the face of the frame, well in excess of 1/16". The frame is shallower than the old one by about 3/4", meaning the edge distance of the bolts that connect the Biesmeyer's angles to the table board frame have almost no edge distance. The fact that the top overhangs the frame raises issues with how the Biesmeyer fence angles will attach to the frame since the bolts are low on the angles. The table board will cause the angles to roll over slightly, unless I stack washers between the angles and the frames to act as spacers. The frame is assembled with staples, which look like they were installed by a neurotic chimpanzee on crack. There are actually so many piled up at each joint that the wood of the frames is blowing out.
I bought this because I was looking to save myself the trouble of making one and running around looking for a high quality plastic-laminate. If I can't find some good p-lam, maybe I'll just make one out of some phenolic faced plywood. Not pretty, but functional. This was a complete waste of money. I'm extremely disappointed in how lousy the quality has become in a relatively short amount of time. Shame on Delta...
