Its price tag comes in under many of its competitors, but the quality is still top-notch, and Delta didn?t skimp on the features, our favorite of which is the fence?s ability to tilt both left and right. If you?re cutting just a slight bevel, it doesn?t really matter which way the fence is angled. But for bigger angles, it?s tricky to keep your workpiece against the fence. Delta?s solution: Tilt the fence toward the cutterhead and flip your workpiece so it fits snugly into the lesser angle. Beauty!

We weren?t sure we?d like a lever as opposed to a good old handwheel for infeed table height adjustments, but it?s easy to operate and gave us precise adjustments. Rabbeting, tapering, edge and face jointing are all a pleasure to perform on the X5. Results were smooth and snipe-free, thanks to the three-knife cutterhead that was set perfectly right from the carton. With a 4800 rpm, you?re making 14,400 cuts a minute.

The X5?s capacities exceeded our expectations with a max width of 6-1/8 inches and a max depth pass of 1/8 inch. The table?s length is just shy of four feet, and we felt comfortable with workpieces as long as eight feet. The fence has positive stops at 45 and 90 degrees, and adjustment is quick and easy should you find them out of alignment.

Assembly took about 90 minutes, and that included swabbing off the generous grease Delta applied for shipping. This machine?s no lightweight at 225 pounds, so enlist a buddy?s help when you?re ready to set it up.

It came in two boxes. I took my time to assemble the tool. 3 hours later, I was cutting wood. It's a bit of a chore to clean all the protective grease from the machined parts, and some of the "spill over" to the painted parts. But when done and completely waxed, it's very cool. I've had no problem with rust pits as another post mentioned. I keep the tool covered when not in use.

After some careful alignment, most of which was checking some factory settings. There was not much adjustment. I did spend quit a while on the motor and pully alignment, making the pullies paralell and correct belt tension. I'm stunned at the results of face and edge jointing. When used with dust collection, it stays very clean. Many say "go to the limit you can afford when getting a power tool, so you won't have to replace it later." In this case it would have been an 8" jointer for several hundered dollars more. I'm perfectly satisfied with this 6" for the results I expect, and the size for moving it around the shop with other tools. It will do for many, many years. I also bought the DeWalt 734 surface planer, so this is the perfect companion.

I'm not a Delta devotee. I consider the best tool for each purchase, independant of name. I have several each of Jet, DeWalt, Porter Cable, and I will consider Grizzly in the future when I replace my old Craftsman table saw. But I'm very satisfied with this Delta 6" jointer. I would certainly buy Delta again if it is appropriate, and would recommend this jointer purchase again.
