Description of DELTA 36-715 Hybrid 10-Inch Left Tilt 1-3/4 Horsepower Intermediate Saw with T2 30-Inch Fence and 2 Cast Iron Extension Wings, 115/230-Volt 1 PhaseDelta?s saws have become a woodworking icon of sorts, and for good reason. They?re powerful, precise and reliable, a reputation earned over many years. For such a powerhouse, it?s amazing that this saw runs on a standard household current. This is huge bonus for the home woodworker who?ll be plugging this saw into a basement or garage outlet. It can be rewired for 220 volts, of course, if that?s what you?re set up for. Once it?s all assembled and set up (be prepared to work!), this is one rock-solid saw, tipping the scales at 358 pounds. The large table and extensions are smooth-as-glass cast iron, and you get a generous 30-inch rip capacity to the right of the blade, 13-1/2 inches to the left. This saw comes with Delta?s own T2 30-inch Fence and Rail; you can buy this same saw with either a Unifence or a Biesemeyer, but we?re as happy with one as the other. The 30-inch T2 that comes with this saw has a three-point T-square locking system with a hairline pointer for super accuracy, and the extruded aluminum fence face attaches to solid steel angle iron and tubing. It glides easily on its rails and lifts off quickly and easily, but what we liked best was the rear hold-down support for use with featherboards and jigs. Paired with the superb fence on this saw is a beautiful, heavy-duty T-slot miter gauge. We like it particularly because it has a larger face than most gauges, and that gives you a lot more stability as the gauge travels. The other thing that puts this gauge at the head of its class is that you can easily micro-adjust all the positive stops. We hope you use your blade guards, but if you don?t and it?s because it gets in the way of blade height measurement, this saw even solves that problem. The guard locks neatly in the raised position so you can measure accurately without dodging the guard. Vibration is absolutely minimal, in part because the saw is so heavy and solid, but Delta?s poly-V belt has little ribs that line up with the pulley, producing smooth power. The way a saw runs is most important, but we also like how this one stops: There?s a huge "off" paddle switch under the front left fence rail, easily hit in an emergency and just plain convenient the rest of the time. Dust collection is better than we anticipated, in part because inside the closed cabinet, there are ramps that let the waste slide down to the 4-inch dust port, where your dust collection system can carry it away. Whether you?re looking to step up from a contractor?s saw or you?re adding to a shop of cabinet saws, you will not be disappointed with this saw.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste
Tools and Hardware Reviews of DELTA 36-715 Hybrid 10-Inch Left Tilt 1-3/4 Horsepower Intermediate Saw with T2 30-Inch Fence and 2 Cast Iron Extension Wings, 115/230-Volt 1 PhaseCustomer Review: Very good value and features for the money! Summary: 5 Stars
I had done much research and had set my mind to buy the Grizzly version of a hybrid saw. I went to the St. Paul woodworking show with a brother and a friend from work (tool guru) and viewed this saw up close. My friend and a Rockler rep went through the features and the merits of buying this saw in the Delta brand and I "caved". We picked it up the next day and realized quickly this saw takes two people to move around, which I hoped was going to be the case.
Two weeks later we assembled the saw and after removing the plywood packing, found initial quality above expectations. Set up went smoothly and my friend brought his micro caliper for setting blade and fence parallel. We found the blade to be 1/16" out of parallel, and it took a small amount of time to get the blade in line, but it's now within .002". The adjustment was not as bad as some of the reviews make it out to be, but it is tight quarters under the table. The fence had very acceptable .005" run-out right out of the box, but I may make this a bit more to reduce chance of burning.
I also purchased the mobile base ($100) sold to fit this saw and highly recommend you buy this if you need to move the saw like I do. The foot pedal is designed to operate from either side and not be a trip hazard when sawing. The base easily moves the 425 lbs. of cabinet, cast iron top, and fence system. (I added the Bench Dog cast iron router extension ($300) to the left side and moved the left extension wing to the right side - see Bench Dog review)
The T2 Fence is not a Biesemeyer, but is still a heavyweight, is straight, and works very well. It glides like a dream and locks with no movement. The blade adjustment wheels are aluminum and feel substantial enough to last as long as the saw. The turn ratio is very good and blade raises, lowers and tilts quickly.
Delta is having a promotion (check for duration) where you receive your choice of a tenoning jig or a highly adjustable miter gauge, after buying this saw. The miter gauge which came standard is more than OK, but I did opt to receive the more substantial gauge shown in the promotion. Expect delivery of that miter gauge by end of April.
I feel I got the best saw I could for the price I was willing to pay. The cost for the base and router table took me to near true cabinet saw prices, but I now have a very good saw, two very good tool stations in one unit, 27"x60" of cast iron work surface, and mobility to change from storage to useage in just a few seconds. My Forrest blade arrived recently and should make this set up complete.
If you have a smaller shop, want better dust control than a contractor saw, want great quality and features, and do not want to wire for 3HP...this saw covers it all, and then some!
